Fargo (KFGO AM) You may not know it but if you have a new car, there's a good chance there's a little black box in it that records your driving habits and vehicle performance. By next year all new cars and light trucks will be required to have the device called an Event Data Recorder. But there are concerns about who can access that information.

That's why Senator's Amy Klobuchar and John Hoeven are co-sponsoring the Driver Privacy Act. It ensures the vehicle owner owns the collected data and it remains private, unless the owner consents to its disclosure.

Klobuchar said "when Ford made the first Ford he couldn't have envisioned that in one of his cars would be something that would allow someone to track you wherever you go."

The legislation would also allow black box information to be retrieved by court order, for a vehicle recall, or for an emergency medical response resulting from a crash.

The Senator's made the announcement in Fargo.
