Re: The Legal Examiner: "Use of Black Box data in Car Crashes"

The EDR's currently installed in newer passenger vehicles do not record data in the manner you think they do. Most newer vehicles need to be involved in a collision of sufficient magnitude to produce a relatively rapid change in speed of at least 5 miles per hour in order to store a record of that e...

Re: 2009 Chevy Silverado T bone

My initial impression is that the Rogue was most definitely traveling significantly faster than 37 to 40 miles per hour. I would suggest to you that the vehicle experienced a change in velocity of at least 37 to 40 miles per hour, which suggests an impact speed well north of 60 miles per hour. I hav...

Re: Parking lot, fixed vehicle hit by moving vehicle - pics/forensics proof?

I was getting a stiff neck looking sideways at the photos you uploaded, so I re-uploaded them rotated in the correct orientation. When two objects collide, the force acting on each object is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction. Which object sustains the most damage is a function of the indi...

Re: Combining speed from crush calculations

Unless all of the vehicles were the same mass, then a combined speed formula would not be an appropriate formula to use. If we assume that the objective of the crush calculations was to estimate the amount of energy expended by the striking vehicle to cause the damage, and we also assume that there ...

Re: got smashed in my 2012 volvo s60

Ben,

The 2012 Volvo S60 is supported by the Bosch CDR Tool. If there is any data on the airbag control module, it can be retrieved by the CDR Tool. I suggest you look for a qualified crash reconstructionist who has a CDR Tool Kit in your area to retrieve the data for you.

Re: Chicago Tribune: "Chrysler recalls about 745,000 Jeeps for airbag issue"

From the NHTSA recall database, it appears that a material change in the squib capacitor in the ORC resulted in a resistance problem that is corrected with an in-line jumper.

Re: Are there photos showing damage and patterns for different type of collision

The tire mark evidence on the roadway I mentioned would be from the right front tire of the pickup at the moment it locked up at the point of maximum engagement with the B-pillar on your vehicle. This tire scuff would not be expected to last long, especially on a high-traffic roadway. If you didn't ...

Re: Are there photos showing damage and patterns for different type of collision

I would be interested in seeing a photograph or two from the pickup involved in the crash, but the photograph of your vehicle shows a lot about the manner of contact between the vehicles. The damage to the left side of your vehicle is consistent with a sideswipe contact with the right front tire of ...

Positioning of new replacement tires on a vehicle.

Interesting article on a presentation given by John Baldwin, a well known tire expert, regarding the industry position on proper replacement tire positioning on a vehicle. HILTON HEAD, S.C.—“New-tires-on-rear” is a universal axiom propagated by tire manufacturers, according to John M. Baldwin, princ...

Re: Are there photos showing damage and patterns for different type of collision

In general, damage can be used to determine the angle at which two vehicles collide with one another. The damage profiles are then compared to the tire marks on the highway to determine how the two vehicles interacted with one another. I'm sorry I cannot give you an answer about what damage profiles...

Re: Critical Speed Formula Evaluation Testing

Lenny, I have listed the abstracts for a few technical papers that deal with the validation of the critical speed methodology. These papers can be obtained at the SAE website for a fee. The search page for SAE technical papers can be found at the following link: http://papers.sae.org/automotive/ 200...
